Experience the pride and prestige of the Zanskari people, battle the harsh climatic conditions as the mercury takes an extreme dip. Connect with the locals just like the confluence of Indus and Zanskar, understand their life saving techniques during the winter climate. You will not find them complaining to Almighty for remaining isolated from the rest of the countries but it gives the honor and opportunity to spend most of their time with the family and friends, sipping the Namkeen Chai and enjoying life. Chadar is mostly walking on ice sheets formed from the flowing water river of Zanskar and surviving in the drastic cold climate. Learn about the mountain ghost stories and the deities which protects the Zanskaris from failing during the winter harsh climate. Understand the attitude and spirit of keep going, no matter what and experience the most adventurous and thrill kicking trek of your life.
- Do note that during winters, the only way to get to Leh is through flight. Make sure you book an early flight and land at Leh by noon.
- Do not rush at the last minute and book your flight months prior to avail cheaper rates
- Since Leh is situated at an height of 11,800 feet, the strong cold winds will welcome you as soon you leave the plane. Make sure you have your gloves, jacket and woolen cap handy.

Day 1 – Arrive at Leh – Land of Passes and Mountains – Acclimatize and enjoy local sight-seeing
Arrival Leh K B Rinpoche Airport (world highest airfield) upon arrival you will meet our Travel Trikon representative at the airport and transfer to Hotel for Check in. we suggest you to have Complete day rest for acclimatization to avoid High Altitude Sickness (HAS) which is common to guest flying from very low attitude to sudden high altitude areas like Leh which is at 3358 m above sea level. You will be Welcome at hotel with herbal tea which is advisable for health concern. Dinner and Overnight stay at guest house/Hotel in Leh.
Day 02:Local sightseeing of Central Asian Museum, Old town Heritage walk,Leh Palace and sunset at Shanti Stupa. Post Lunch filling of Tourist Chaddar Medical examination at SNM hospital, Leh.
After breakfast, you will visit Ladakh’s richest and Famous architectural sites;a guided heritage walk is being organized and promoted by our Company to get knowledge about Ladakhi architecture, culture and traditions.
the first destination is LehTsalu soma Mosque,the oldest Mosque built in 15th century during the silk route of central Asia, Leh was the transit camp between the different countries, the Central Asian Museum lies in the same compound and is run by Anjuman-moin-ul-Islam of Leh, which is the sole owner of the Museum, the three story building reflects 03 different culture of Ladakh, Kashmir and Tibetan which has significant influence on the Ladakhi culture and tradition. Next destination is the Leh Jamia Masjid, situated in the heart of the Leh city, built in 1666-67 AD, under an agreement between Mughal Emperor and Ladakhi king. Mughal king Aurangzeb and Ladakhi ruler Deldan Namgyal had an agreement to construct a Mosque in Ladakh. Initially the architecture of the mosque was of Tibetan, central Asian, and Ladakhi style, but with the passage of time and increase in Muslim population now it has been reconstructed with multiple stories with modern facilities and minarets and domes inspired from Iranian architecture.
Leh Palace, a nine storey building erected on a hill with Ladakhi style and architecture, a recommended tourist spot for students and architecture disciples, below the palace lies Leh old Town, a must see Ladakhi settlement houses to about 396 registered homes with 120 heritage listed buildings.In the last you will proceed towards Shanti Stupa for sunset. Dinner & Overnight stay at the Hotel in Leh.
Post Lunch will proceed towards Sonam Memorial Hospital, Leh for filling of Medical examination and checkup of oxygen level and Blood pressure. Dinner & Overnight stay at the Guesthouse/Hotel.
Day 03:Local sightseeing and Monastery visit, And get Medical Certificate fitness from SNM Hospital.
After having breakfast, we will take to Leh Srinagar national highway to visit Hall of Fame, Indo Pak war memorials place, where you will find and see the photographs and diaries of brave Soldiers who fought for Mother india in kargil war.Next comes the SpitukorPe-ThupMonasterybuilt on a cliff literally means ‘exemplary”near to Leh airfield, it is 7 km , south of Leh City, founded by OLder I in 11th century AD.The great translator, LotsavaRinchenZangpo named it Pethup. The spituk Gustor/festival takes place on 18th and 19th of the eleventh month of the Tibetan calendar. Next tourist spot comes is Magnetic Hill, the phenomenon of magnetic drive. Just about a kilometer after the confluence of Zanskar and Indus River meets at Nimoo point. During the summer season the Zanskar River is used for White water rafting, a thrilling adventure for adventure lovers with the rapids goes up to 4+ during peak days and the same Zanskar river is used for frozen CHADAR trek during winters which attracts domestic as well as foreigners.
Post lunch you will visit Ladakh’s richest and Famous Monasteries on the way to Leh Manali national Highway. Post Breakfast we proceed with Hemis Gompa, the richest monastery founded by Drukpa Kagyu Order of Tibetan Buddhism, the monastery has a museum as well opened 5 years back to tourist with a classic antique collection. Then comes the famous Thiksey Monastery which is built on a hill with resemblance to Potala Palace of Tibet, the Thiksey village lies beneath to the Gompa and the local populace are disciple of the Monastery. The 3rd visit is Shey Palace Gompa, The ancient summer capital of Ladakh kingdom, the Shey Palace is known as SHEKHAR, the word is derived from Shelmeans mirror and Khar means Palace,next comes the Rancho School of Druk Padma Karpo School in Shey village. The SHAH-E-HAMDAN MASJID in Shey village is famous devotee place for Muslims all over world, which is restored by J&K Tourism as Heritage site worldwide. The next visit is Sindhu Ghat, a religious spot for Sindhi devotees; a 3 day Sindhu festival is organized by Sindhi committee on 25th, 26th& 27th of june every year on the bank of Indus river.
While coming back, you will collect Medical Certificate fitness from Leh hospital which is required to perform Chadar trek and will be duly checked at the wildlife post at Chilling Trekking point, without which the tourist/ Participants will not be permitted to perform the trek.Drive back to Leh. Dinner & Overnight stay at the Guest house/Hotel.
Day 04:The trek on the Chadar starts from today only. Drive to Chilling Village to Tilad Do. (4hrs Max).
We will start early in the morning from the guest house/ homestay/hotel for Chilling. Will take about 2 hours to get there, the drive takes you along the Indus River where the confluence of Indus and Zanskar River meets at Nimoo village, halt for few minutes for photograph, the drive continues then and reaches Tilad Do, the trekking point. Get down from the Cab. Get yourself prepared for the most thrilling frozen river trek of your life to make into the most memorable one. Put your first step on the Frozen Chadar, you will feel thrilled and enjoyment and appreciate yourself in making the right decision for the Chaddar, you have to cross the frozen river to reach the campsite. While reaching the camp our experienced staff will provide you the basic information to survive in the harsh cold climate. Enjoy the huge peaks all around you with hot cup of coffee/herbal tea. To get you warm take a little short hike into the mountains and capture the overwhelming look of the frozen river. The temperature drops down in the night. Take your dinner and go for sleep in the tent.
Day 05 - Trek Day 01: Trek from TiladDho to Gyalpo(Distance to be covered 12km , 5-6 hrs).
While reaching the trekking point, get yourself prepared for the most thrilling experience of your life which is walking on the frozen sheets of water of Zanskar river. Today we will walk the distance of 12 km approximately, the Guide will give you an instruction on how to walk on the frozen river, following the instruction of your guide will help you in completing the trek without facing any difficulties and protecting yourself from the cold water and weather.
Depending on the weather and the temperature during nights, the formation of ice on river is formed,some time the ice layer could be thick or thin, or in worse, sometime the formation of ice is very thin or nothing then at some point you have to step down into the freezing flowing water through your knee or up to waist or climb on the cliffs on the mountains to cross to the other side of the trek to continue. You will also encounter the dusting of snow covered on the ice which makes you slippery and hard enough to walk, during all these time you need the very basic tool and that is the “SPIRIT OF KEEP GOING”,it is well said“FAILING IS NOT A CRIME BUT LACK OF EFFORT IS”.Take proper rest in between and keep one pace in walking.The first rest point is the ShingraKongma, which is a small beautiful place near the river, start walking to reach the first camping site-Gyalpo. Dinner and Night halt at Gyalapo.It is advisable to drink proper fluid/water for dehydration.
Day 06 - Trek Day 02: Gyalpo to Tibb Cave(distance to be covered 14 km).
Wakeup call for today’s trek is at 6:00am in the morning, the distance we have to cover today is 14 km in total. Eat proper breakfast and get yourself ready by 8:00am to start your day. Follow the instruction of your guide and keep walking. While during the trek you will find a number of small and big caves in the mountains which is used since centuries long by the Zanskari people to get shelter and keep warm during the nights which is also a transit stay for the Zanskari. Keep looking at the sides of the mountains to get a closer look of frozen waterfall, capture the magnificent sizes of the frozen waterfall.
The Tibb cave is big in size, where there is enough space to accommodate the group. Enjoy the born fire in the cave which will make the space warm, share your experiences of the day with the fellow trekkers and enquire tomorrows trail with your guide and the staff. Relax your nerves and enjoy the warmth of a cup of black coffee.Dinner and Night halt at Tibb cave.
Day 07 - Trek Day 03: From Tibb Cave to Nyeerak village.
Start little early to spend more time at the biggest water fall which falls in between the trail, The reflection of the sunlight, mountains and the sky gives enormous colour on the big ice structure which is meters in height and equally wide in size. Take picture of this huge structure to frame it in your collection. Walking through the valley and crossing the George you will find a variety of shrubs and herbs on the cliffs, the herbs is of medicinal value used by the local Amchi (traditional local doctor) to heal different ailments. While during the trek you will also find big trees of Juniper grown in full sizes, which is listed in protected flora chart and is equally watched by the forest department from cutting it down. The juniper tree is considered auspicious in Buddhist philosophy, the twigs and the branches is used by the Buddhist in every ceremony as an incense stick.
There is a bridge on the right side of the waterfall which is used as a road in summer by the people of Leh and Zanskar. The village settlement lies above the Zanskar river, if you wish to experience the lifestyle of the locals, an extra hour will take you into the village, the locals are warm heartedly in nature and will offer you a cup of butter-salt tea. We will pitch our tents close to the river. Dinner and Night halt at Camp in Nyeerak camp site.
Day 08 - Trek Day 04: Naerak to Tibb
Follow same trail takes place, the only difference is you are hiking in the reverse way until you reach back to Leh.
From Nyeraak back to Tibb cave is the distance you have to cover today. There is chance to encounter with the locals who might be travelling to Leh via the same route. The nearest monastery monks and the local people who have send their children in Leh School for better education keep often travel on Chaddar. You will notice the locals wearing the traditional dresses from head to toe to keep themselves warm during winters. The inhabitants are much adapted to the harsh climate, the smile on their faces will encourage you to lead the trek and make it success.
Day 09 - Trek Day 05: Tibb to Gyalpo(distance to be covered 14km).
And from Tilad-Do, you will be driven back to Leh. Transfer in to Guest house/Hotel. Dinner and overnight stay at Leh
After having your breakfast start packing all your extra gears and get yourself ready for the last hiking on the ice sheet on the last day of the unforgettable trek of your life. The trekking staffs start singing local folk songs to pay thanks giving to the Mother Nature to make the trek success, the last chance to say goodbye to the local people and the last time to exchange the greetings among the staff and the group members of the trek.
The valley is rich of flora and fauna, the wild animals like ibex, red fox, Tibetan snow cook and in fact the big cat popularly known as the “ghost cat” or snow leopard owns the territory of this region. You will find the pug marks on the snow of these big cats or the footprints of other animals, and if you are lucky enough you will find the snow leopard on the cliffs hunting its prey while the other wild animals roam in the valley in search of food.
Day 10 : Buffer day OR Depart from Leh.
Our representative will drop you at Leh KBR Airport, Fly home with smile and memories, back to home.
As you have accomplished the challenging trek, you will feel pride and it will be a cherished memory of your life. You have learnt the techniques and skill to survive in harsh extreme weather condition and also have witnessed the hard life the ZANSKARI people are facing, the respect and encouragement for the Zanskari people bravely fighting the odds, surviving and defeating and accepting the will definitely teach you a lifetime lesson to remember.
Things to Carry
- A photocopy of your Identity Proof (Passport / Voter ID Card/PAN Card/Aadhar Card/ Driving License)
- Backpack or Haversack – If you are offloading your Haversack, you will need a small daypack to carry your basic essentials
- Good trekking shoes and a pair of slip-ons, if required for campsite
- Trekking pole – Always advisable to carry for extra grip and support
- 2 Water Bottles (1 litre each)
- Woolen or Fleece Gloves and a pair of waterproof gloves
- Cotton socks and woolen socks (5 and 3 pairs respectively)
- 1 Down feather/Hollofil jacket
- Balaclava, Woolen scarf – If you do not have a Balaclava, you can carry Monkey cap instead
- Thermal Inners
- Fleece Jacket, Snow Jacket or Padded Jacket (1 each)
- Windcheater or Poncho
- 2-3 pairs of trek pants
- 3 collared and full sleeved t-shirts – Do not carry loose t-shirts as they tend to make you feel cold
- Ready to eat snacks, Enerzyl Powder or Glucon D Powder – Carry nuts, dryfruits, energy bars to munch during the trek. They provide instant energy whenever it hits the lower base.
- Cap, Sunglasses – Do ensure that your sunglasses are UV Protected. Do not carry reflectors. If you wear spectacles, carry photo chromatic glasses. Please do not wear contact lenses for this trek
- Headlamp/LED Torch – Mandatory
- Toiletries – Sunscreen, Moisturizer, light towel, lip balm, wet wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, Hand Sanitizer, Mosquito repellent, if required
- Polythene Bags or Zip-lock Bags – These help to segregate wet clothes, used wet wipes or sanitary napkins on trek
- Any medicines that you normally consume – Please consult your doctor in this regard
Consuming liquor or any kind of Alcoholic substance and drugs is prohibited. Carrying any kind of substance that’s illegal is not allowed. Anybody found consuming alcoholic drinks and drugs will be expelled from the event without refund.
However please note that, Smoking in Public is strictly banned and a punishable offence.
Fitness & Health – Though trekking is a fun-filled activity, it demands good amount of physical fitness. If you are under medication, please carry your medicines. During the trek, leaders will have over the counter medication for temporary treatment, so do give a heads up to them if you need any medical assistance.
